Nurul completed her PhD in Social Anthropology at Cambridge in 2018, before beginning her postdoctoral career in Leiden at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), and in Paris at the Collège d’Études Mondiales.

At CASE, Nurul will work on a project called “Intimacy on the Move: Cross-Border Marriage & Migration at the Malaysian-Thai Frontier”, in which she will research Thai female migrants’ search for “romantic fate” (jodoh) and economic fortune (rezeki) in Malaysia. This will build on her existing work on intimacy, marriage and polygamy in contemporary Malaysia that will appear in her upcoming monograph based on her doctoral thesis, entitled “Halal Intimacy: Love, Marriage & Polygyny in Contemporary Malaysia”.

Nurul is very much looking forward to an exciting year of learning and sharing with everyone at CASE!
