Domaines de recherche

• Depuis 1988 je me spécialise sur les questions liées aux transformations sociales et culturelles chez les populations montagnardes d’Asie. J’ai produit en 1995 une thèse sur le changement social en lien avec le tourisme dans un village de minoritaires hmong de Thaïlande. J’ai ensuite consacré un post-doctorat à creuser la thématique du développement au Centre de Recherche sur le Développement International à Ottawa. De 1996 à 2002, j’ai été professeur au Centre for South-East Asian Studies de l’université de Hull, au Royaume-Uni. Mon terrain principal s’est alors déplacé vers les hautes terres du Vietnam septentrional, auquel s’ajoutent maintenant les hauteurs du nord-Laos. Après m’être associé en 2002 aux travaux de la Chaire de Recherche du Canada en Études Asiatiques de l’Université de Montréal, j’ai rejoint en 2006 le département d’anthropologie de l’université Laval.
• Je m’active dans le champ de l’impact local, dans les pays de la périphérie, des législations nationales et des tendances mondiales. J’étudie les phénomènes de marchés locaux et leur transformation, les déplacements intra régionaux et internationaux des populations, et le travail sur les identités montagnardes dans les 6 pays qui se partagent le massif sud-est asiatique – Chine, Vietnam, Cambodge, Laos, Thaïlande et Birmanie (Myanmar). Je m’intéresse à la résistance politique et économique des paysans et à la standardisation identitaire dans les États post-socialistes d’Asie orientale (Chine, Vietnam, et Laos). Les groupes minoritaires y sont en transition accélérée vers l’économie de marché et l’inclusion à la Nation par le biais de vecteurs comme la sédentarisation et la transition agraire (incluant les migrations rurales-urbaines-rurales), ainsi que par l’arrivée de phénomènes récents comme l’éducation nationale et le tourisme. Les stratégies adaptatives localisées sont diversifiés, colorées par les cultures propres à chaque groupe. Les Hmong, auxquels je voue une attention particulière, sont exemplaires de cette dynamique complexe, en particulier par le canal d’une diaspora dynamique implantée au Canada, aux Etats-Unis, en Australie et en France. Enfin, les questions liées à l’anthropologie historique des montagnards du massif sud-est asiatique m’amènent à fouiller les archives missionnaires et militaires de la période coloniale. Je prépare un livre sur ce sujet intitulé ’Incidental’ Ethnographers. French Catholic Missions on the Frontier of Tonkin and Yunnan, 1880-1930, à paraître chez Brill.
