DOMAINES DE RECHERCHE

Les priorités d'Arlo Griffiths sont la publication de documents manuscrits et épigraphiques inédits, sous forme d’édition critique, et leur exploitation d’un point de vue historique. Son champ de prédilection actuel est l'étude d'inscriptions tant sud-est asiatiques qu'indiennes, aussi bien en langue sanskrite qu’en langues vernaculaires austroasiatiques et austronésiennes (vieux-khmer, vx.-cham, vx.-javanais). Il a débuté son parcours scientifique par l'étude de la tradition textuelle et rituelle des brahmanes appartenant à l'école Paippalāda de l’Atharvaveda, toujours vivante en Orissa (Inde) jusqu’à nos jours, et reste actif dans ce domaine. Il s'intéresse également à la linguistique descriptive des langues tribales de l'Asie du Sud-Est et de l'Inde, notamment celles qui appartiennent au groupe « munda », branche de la famille austroasiatique.

  • Édition de textes sanskrits : Vivāhādikarmapañjikā (avec Shilpa Sumant, Pune) et Sarvabuddhasamāyogaḍākinījālaśaṁvara (avec P.-D. Szántȯ et A. Sanderson, Oxford).
  • Étude de divers corpus épigraphiques : ceux des Gupta et de Nagarjunakonda en Inde ; les inscriptions du Campā, du Cambodge, du Sumatra, du Java, et de la Birmanie, en Asie du Sud-Est.
