RESEARCH AREAS

  • Study of a Sinicized world or from China to Southeast Asia over the longue durée
  • Insights through conscious and unconscious acculturation phenomena, at the global but also particular level—through prosopography studies
  • The following are emphasized:
    • the importance of translations in the history of cultural transfers
    • the preservation of a certain so-called Chinese culture—the role of Chinese in relation to the languages of the host countries
    • the development of a hybrid culture and of a specific literature of one’s own when it comes to Maritime Southeast Asia
    • the reconstruction of a sometimes mythical history—anchoring in the host society through divinization of local heroes
    • the setting up of economic models and constitution of networks that reproduce mutatis mutandis those of the origin country—long distance rice commerce, development of cash crops, in particular sugar cane…

CURRENT RESEARCH TOPICS

  • Cultural links between Fujian and the Chinese of Maritime Southeast Asia
  • Introduction of Chinese medicine and pharmaceutics in Indonesia, attempt at a historical overview
  • From gathering to producing swallow nests in Indonesia
  • Perspectives on Malay loan words in Chinese
  • Towards a history of the Sino-Indonesian pharmacopoeia
