  • Philosophy teacher
  • Research Fellow at the ‘Laboratoire d’ethnologie et de sociologie comparative’ (CNRS-Paris X)
  • 1978 to 1980- Cultural Attaché in Hong Kong
  • From 1984- joins the IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement), where he has been a Senior Research Fellow and a member of the Scientific Committee.
  • 1986 to 1989- Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore)
  • 1993 to 1999- ethnographic assignments in South Laos, in the provinces of Salavan and Sekong, among Austroasiatic populations of the Annamite Range (Ta’Oi, Pacoh, Ngkriang and Kantu)
  • 2008 to 2011- Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford (Oriental Institute, Wolfson College and Maison française d’Oxford)
  • From September 2011- Head of the Ventiane center of the EFEO (École française d’extrême Orient—French School of Asian Studies)
  • Since 2004- Senior Research Fellow in the “Comparative Ethnology of Southeast Asia” at the EFEO, the EPHE (École pratique des hautes études) and the École nationale des chartes.
