Overview of the Centre Asie du Sud-Est—Center for Southeast Asian Studies
The Centre Asie du Sud-Est—Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CASE/UMR 8170) is a major rallying point for studies on Southeast Asia in France. This joint research center, which pools resources from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the INaLCO, was founded in 2006, and federates interdisciplinary research on the eleven countries of Southeast Asia (Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), but also on the neighboring regions or States, such as Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and southern China.
Thanks to the wide range of fields of study represented among its members, the CASE explores “Southeast Asia” as a cultural area, seeking out its points of convergence and of disjunction. Far from essentializing this object, the Center is interested in the societies of the region both in their singularity and in their reciprocal relations. It produces knowledge on these societies whose role and weight is growing ever greater in the contemporary world.
It brings together about twenty scholars from an array of institutions (CNRS, EFEO, INaLCO, Université de Picardie) and from different fields: history, archaeology, philology, economy, epigraphy, geography, linguistics, anthropology, ethnomusicology.
The CASE has a documentation center that boasts a significant collection of works on Indonesia and insular Southeast Asia
The CASE is highly active in publishing, and one of its main productions is the international-level journal Archipel, focused on Maritime Southeast Asia.
